It first happened back in November (Nov 18, to be exact), and I thought my Garmin FR610 was dead. The display went blank, though the unit itself was tracking my activity. Somehow, the next day, it came back alive. I never understood what the problem was: It was not battery or charging problem. Fast forwarded to yesterday, when I went for a long run but cut short due to a heavy rain, the display went blank again during the run. Again, the buttons were working, which allowed me to keep tracking my run. Over night, I kept the watch on the charging cradle, and the display seemed normal again this morning. Then, something new happened.
When I got to the track for a team practice, the display was flashing and the digital information was illegible. Again, the unit was working, so I managed to log a couple of repeats, but I stopped tracking after that. Now, the display looks blurry and broken (see pictures above), and it is impossible to operate the watch navigating the menu. I looked online for similar troubles Garmin owners might be experiencing, but to no avail. So, I sent an email to Garmin Product Support this afternoon and am waiting for their reply. Did the watch get too much rain/moisture somehow? FR610 is supposed to be waterproofed to IPX7 level: A robust resistance to the ingress of particles. Based on Garmin’s website, it should “withstand incidental exposure to water of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes“.
This watch is not yet four years old, so I expect it still has a good life left. I will see what Garmin might say about it. I will update this post as I hear from them. If anyone had similar issues and/or solutions, I would love to hear about them.
Update: Garmin’s product support responded rather quickly. But the response was not what I wanted to hear. Because it is outside the one-year warranty period, I would need to pay $99 to exchange it for a replacement unit. Tax and shipment would be separate. I assume it would not be a brand-new watch. So, I went ahead and bought Forerunner 630!
